Euro T20 Postponed due to COVID-19 Crisis

As you all know COVID-19 followed by countrywide lockdown has made cricketing activities on halt.  Every day we are hearing the postponement of tours and events. Recently ICC has postponed the T20 world cup to September-October this year and IPL was postponed to October-November and the tournament is entirely shifted to UAE. The recent addition to the postponement of highly expected showpiece event is the inaugural edition of Euro t20 slam. Now the tournament was shifted to next year and the official announcement regarding this was made yesterday by the board.  In a statement made by the governing board it states that efforts were made to find the window for conducting the event in 2020 but after the serious consultation with organisers, financial backers and respective board members of Ireland, Scotland and Netherland the decision was taken unanimously for the betterment of players, officials and spectators.

Talks were revolved around holding the event in the shorter format, single venue and closed doors along with reducing team and player pool but Irish government was reluctant to given permission to hold the event which caused uncertainty. So the decision was taken unanimously to hold the event next year which will meet the objective of conducting the event. The unfavourable travel condition and lack of proper window for conducting the event cost the project. The main objective of conducting event apart from financial stability is providing the high-quality cricketing experience to their players and this will happen if top players across the globe participate in this tournament which is not possible considering the current situation. Ireland cricket board has firmly believed that making it as a successful franchise concept we have to inaugurate the tournament at the right time that will cost them to emerge successfully. So they have decided to postpone the tournament.

The tournament was about to start in August this year and six teams were all set to participate in the tournament. The matches were scheduled to hold in round-robin basis and world’s top players including England’s captain Eion morgan, New Zealand’s Martin Guptill and Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi are all set to participate in the tournament. International travel hurdles, quarantine requirements and status of fan attendance cost the tournament badly. The tournament has given the glimpse of hope to popularise cricket in European regions. Warren Deutrom the Ireland executive has said that the board is very much positive to hold the event next year without any hurdles.

No wonder the inaugural edition of Euro slamT20 was postponed due to organisational hurdles. This is mainly due to COVID-19 pandemic and organisational hurdles followed by the widespread virus.
